In the year 1180, when Emperor Goshirakawa’s second son Prince Takakura-no-miya Mochihito-o raised an army to search and destroy the Taira clan, the enshrinement of the protective Kannon figure he bestowed upon the chief vassal of his followers was said to be the beginning of the Takakura Kannon-do.
At the time of its establishment, the temple was located at the western foot of Mt. Maruyama, but from 1644-1648, it was moved to the southwestern foot of the mountains. Then, in 1739, it was moved to its current location halfway up the southern side of the mountain, where it overlooks the village.
At present, to coincide with Entsuji Temple’s Shiman Hassen Festival, the Buddhist image is revealed from the evening of August 9th.
