The 33 Kannon of Aizu No.26 Tomioka Kannon-Do

While there are no markers to indicate when the temple was originally constructed, a votive left by a pilgrim to the temple was discovered during reconstruction in 1997, which indicates the temple was built before 1446. A temple gong with the inscription 1426 also exists; temple records of the gong exist, which indicates the temple may have been constructed around this period.

Although there are some modifications that have been made for posterity, the building is still representative of Aizu architecture from the middle ages; the Zen Buddhist-style architecture has been preserved. It has been designated a National Important Cultural Property.

On the evening of August 9th ever year, the Juichimen Kannon is put on display, to celebrate the “48,000 days” festival. This is the only time the kannon is on display throughout the year.

Fukushouji Temple is also connected with the Ooguchi Dairyou legend of Kegonji Temple in Gifu Prefecture.
